Yoga
I discovered the world of yoga following a number of sports related injuries. I know you've heard it before, but yoga didn't just change my body, it changed my life. I became certified in Bikram and then in Ashtanga Vinyasa. I then founded World Yoga, a healing arts center and green yoga studio that quickly became one of the premier power yoga studios in the San Francisco Bay Area. I went on to study and teach Restorative, Yin, Prenatal and Kids yoga.
My teaching is most inspired by the fantastic teachers I was blessed to manage for 5 years and the over 5,000 students who walked through World Yoga's door. My teaching style is influenced by Shiva Rea, Saul David Raye, Sharon Gannon, David Life and Paul Grilley. My classes combine a balance of asana (poses), pranayama (breath) and meditation. I often incorporate aromatherapy, inspirational music, visualizations, poetry and sound healing. My goal as a yoga teacher is to help others develop more self awareness, compassion, and connection to life through their physical practice, and to apply those lessons off the mat into their lives outside of the yoga room.
What is Yoga?
There are so many definitions, and many interpretations, but in general, yoga means union, or to connect, to join. Yoga is an ancient system and study of the many ways we can find connection to ourselves, our bodies and minds, to those around us, to the present moment, to peace, and for some, to the divine of our choice.
What is Hatha Yoga?
The form of Yoga that I teach is Hatha, or the physical practice of yoga. Hatha, translated from the ancient language of Sanskrit to mean Sun/Moon, is a system of asanas or poses designed to bring you in direct contact with your body and through that contact develop a deeper connection to other aspects of yourself. There are many kinds of Hatha Yoga. Which form to practice is based on personal taste and needs.
What are the benefits?
A Hatha practice can give you a variety of gifts:
- Increase strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health
- Cultivate equilibrium and internal peace
- Learn new tools for reducing tension and stress
- Gain mental clarity and focus
- Inhabit your body in a way that will profoundly impact all other areas of your life!
What styles of yoga do you teach?
I teach:
- Restorative – A deeply relaxing class using supported postures, breathing and gentle music to allow the body to heal from injury, illness and stress.
- Yin – A class that focuses on passive, long held stretches designed to open up muscles, connective tissue, and meridians (lines of energy in the body) resulting in increased energy and flexibility.
- Flow – Postures are linked together with breath and movement to create a full body experience that increases strength, flexibility, relaxation and clarity.
- Ashtanga Vinyasa (Modified) -Based on the original Flow created by Pattabhi Jois, this vigorous class offers a set sequence designed to bring about detoxification and purification of the body and mind.
- Power Flow – A Flow class with a more intense pacing and advanced poses as well as more hand balancing poses.
